Research Interest: 

My research interests are mainly in applied Electromagnetics, specifically in waves propagation in biological tissues, Radiofrequency (RF) shimming in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), temperature increase in biological tissues.

During my Doctorate Program I developed mathematical models for electromagnetic wave scattering analysis, especially focusing on elliptic geometries useful to model fields distribution in the human head or torso for MRI, and mathematical tools such as algorithms to compute the Mathieu functions for complex parameters, characteristic of lossy materials. In addition, I developed an analytical method to optimize transmit efficiency in a localized region for an arbitrary transmit array loaded with a human subject.

In recent years I have been involved in projects related to RF heating in MRI: specifically I have first developed a method to rapidly compute n-gram average Specifically Absorption Rate (SAR) using spherical adaptive masks (download link), and then fast algorithms to compute temperature increase in biological tissues. Specifically, I designed a digital filter to compute temperature increase due to SAR absorption which is drastically faster than classic numerical methods based on Finite Difference analysis, and I developed a method to quickly predict long term temperature increase based on the convolution of the temperature impulse response to a short SAR pulse with a sequence of SAR pulses having different amplitudes. Recently, I have also focused in theoretical analysis of the effect of high permittivity dielectric materials when used to enhance the transmitted RF field in human tissues. These studies resulted in the development of a matching theory for fields closed to the source, where the ratio of electrical and magnetic fields, and thus the impedance of free space, is different than in the far field.
