AI Program: Machine Learning Research Scientist

We are looking for a highly motivated and passionate machine learning (ML) researcher with expertise in ML applications to computer vision and natural language processing to join our team as Machine Learning Research Scientist.

The successful candidate will become a member of an interdisciplinary group comprising research scientists, research faculty, postdoctoral fellows, clinicians, and engineers. The Machine Learning Research Scientist will use large-scale medical-imaging and non-imaging datasets to engage with interdisciplinary research topics and develop ML solutions for various complex and novel problems.

This role offers a unique opportunity to not only develop ML models but also deploy them in real clinical workflows, thereby making a positive difference in the lives of real patients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Solve challenging clinical problems at the intersection of ML and medical imaging.
  • Explore novel ways in which ML can have a positive impact on the radiology pipeline, e.g. by improving diagnostic accuracy, increasing efficiency, or optimizing workflows.
  • Work alongside fellow researchers and clinicians to develop scalable algorithms for problems in medical imaging based on state-of-the-art ML techniques, such as self-supervised learning, representation learning, and multi-modal learning.
  • Provide technical guidance to clinical faculty and students on their respective research projects.
  • Adapt ML and neural network algorithms and architectures to best exploit modern parallel environments, such as GPUs and distributed clusters.
  • Act as a project leader responsible for creating project plans, meeting deadlines, and resolving technical problems.
  • Build strong cross-functional partnerships within the department and the institution to initiate novel research.
  • Create intellectual property by publishing original research in top-tier venues, filing patent applications, or writing invention disclosures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in computer science or equivalent, or a master’s degree with strong experience and publication record in ML research.
  • Thorough understanding of ML fundamentals, probability, statistics, and numerical optimization.
  • Research experience in ML, computer vision, natural language processing, signal processing, and data mining.
  • Proven track record of achieving results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, and publications at workshops or conferences, such as ICML, NIPS, or KDD.
  • Demonstrated software engineer experience via internships, work, coding competitions, or used contributions to open source repositories (e.g. GitHub).
  • Experience in building ML models using large-scale datasets.
  • Experience working with ML and computer vision libraries, such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and OpenCV.
  • Familiarity with programming in low-level languages such as C/C++.
  • Ability to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical understanding of the DICOM standard (NIfTI, FSL, etc.), as well as some familiarity with radiology software, such as Vital, OsiriX, and PACS.
  • Prior exposure to or some domain knowledge of ML applications in medical imaging.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
