First Integrated Siemens MR-PET System Arrives at CAI²R

The world's first commercially available integrated MR-PET system for whole-body exams of the human body, the Siemens Biograph mMR, was installed at the Center for Biomedical Imaging and is now in full operation. NYU is the first site in the New York area that has access to this ground-breaking technology. For the first time, it is now possible to perform PET exams simultaneously with MRI scans, which eliminates the radiation dose created by CT imaging. So far, CT was the only imaging technique that could be used to obtain high-resolution images during PET exams. The Biograph mMR replaces CT imaging with MR imaging, which makes the exams more safe and additionally offers the diagnostic capabilities of advanced MR imaging. CAI²R researchers are now working on unleashing the full potential of this new technology, including the development of previously infeasible approaches for motion correction.
