The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Laboratories for Convergence of Biomedical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences in Honor of Saul J. Farber

Also located in the 660 building are the Sackler Laboratories, which are based in our leading RF engineering core facility. The Sackler Laboratories provide support for investigators interested in cross-cutting projects which bring basic biophysics and technology development to bear in addressing high-impact problems in human health.

The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Laboratories for Convergence of Biomedical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences in Honor of Saul J. Farber mission is to:

  • Provide custom RF coils for MRI to CAI2R researchers to address research needs and improve patient care.
  • Conduct physics research aimed at improving the performance and safety of RF coils.

Key features and equipment of our laboratory:

  • 7 fully equipped electronics workbenches
  • Circuit board fabrication
  • Dielectric probe
  • Phantom construction facilities
  • 3D printer

With these available features and equipment it allows the lab to produce a wide range of coils and phantoms, ranging from simple surface coils and electric dipole elements for physics investigations to a 128 element body array and finished coils for human imaging in daily use on the scanners.

Many opportunities are being explored for fundamental improvements in RF coil performance due to CAI2R deep expertise in electrodynamics and RF interactions with tissue. Analysis of Ultimate Intrinsic SNR and Ideal Current Patterns suggests the need for novel element designs to exploit the more complex RF behavior that emerges at fields of 3 Tesla and higher, and prototype designs are being constructed and evaluated in the Sackler Laboratories.

Ultra high field imaging will benefit from parallel transmission techniques, and these require specialized transmit array coils. And currently many different transmit array designs are being constructed and evaluated. 

The techniques developed here at this facility have many applications, such as evaluating the safety of wireless devices such as cell phones, and the use of high dielectric materials to increase sensitivity and reduce tissue heating.

The laboratory also serves as a hands-on training and teaching facility.

 

NYU Cyclotron and Radiochemistry Labs and MicroPET Facility

Further renovations and expansions of CBI facility are also planned in the near future to accommodate a cyclotron and radiochemistry laboratory (directly adjacent to the MR-PET scanner) for the production of novel
PET tracers, and an animal microPET/CT scanner.

The cyclotron and radiochemistry facilities which will be constructed adjacent to our MR-PET scanner over the next 1.5 years, together with our unique resources will position our facility as a leading national resource for the prospective evaluation and dissemination of translational imaging protocols for synergistic MR-PET applications.

Our new cyclotron will be in operation within the next year and a half, and our radiochemistry lab is currently being constructed.
